THE ROYAL WELSH 2011 18 to 21 July, Builth Wells, Powys Everyone was keen to see if the main ring had improved from 2010 when after the heavy rain before and during the show the ring resembled a ploughed field. The rain held off until the final day when there were only a few showers. The main ring stood up to the wear during the four days much to the relief of the Show. Stewart & Annie Franklin’s homebred Section A SARUM RIPPLING ROSE won the 2 year old filly/gelding class. Quite an achievement for her first show. Another homebred pony SARUM CAMELIA whom they sold at Fayre Oaks last year won the 3 year old filly/gelding class for her new owner Jane Goodhead and was also awarded the Reserve Youngstock Championship. Another homebred pony from the South West to win a big class was Cathie Pearse’s UPHILL JAMES FOX who won the 3 year old colt class, he also won here as a yearling, quite a record! Stewart & Annie Franklin’s SPRINGBOURNE ENVOY was seventh in the stallion class. Sharon Gay’s LEMONSHILL BELLBIRD was eighth in the Section B 3 year old filly/gelding class and the second gelding. In the Section Cs Jacky & George Coper’s POPSTERS MOVIE STAR won the 3 year old filly/gelding class and went on to be awarded the Reserve Youngstock Champion. In the Welsh Part Bred classes Mike Coombes’ homebred GORESMEAD CASTELLANE won the yearling not to exceed 148cm class and was awarded the under 148cm Reserve Championship. She also won the Riding Pony Breeding yearling filly, colt and gelding class. In the ridden classes Jan Mann was seventh in a very large class for Section Cs with her mare WYKEN WELSH POPPY. Chris Davies was second in the Section D gelding class on his NEWYDD BEN HUR to the eventual Section D Champion Botleymill Magic Spark. In the Section D stallion class Les Rayfield and Katie Chappell’s LLANFYLLIN SHOOTING STAR was second. In the Ridden HOYS qualifier classes Freddie Thompson was second in the Secttion A class with POWYS JACK FLASH. Maggie & John Carter’s homebred MILLCROFT GHOST was third in the Section B class. Liz Launder’s GORFELYN GO LIGHTLY won the WHP not Exceeding 122cm class. Many congratulations to you all. SWAWPCS AGM A well attended, interesting and informative annual general meeting of the Swawpcs took place on Saturday in Exeter . All the current hard working committee were unanimously voted back on and despite the recession and difficult showing conditions, an air of optimism prevailed. The Swawpcs is determined to provide its members with an excellent showing schedule throughout 2011 and wishes all its members a very Happy and successful 2011. All the helpers/stewards/etc that can be recruited for the 2011 shows would be welcomed with open arms!! Don't forget that if you steward or help in one of our shows you are entitled to a free lunch compliments of the Swawpcs!! If you would like to be involved in any way, no matter how small a contribution, please contact your area rep (see right down below on this page) or the show secretary of your show in which you would like to help. The Stud Competition awards were presented by Mrs Terry Court with Stuart Franklin from Sarum Stud taking Supreme Stud and followed by Cathie Pierce taking reserve. Full Stud Competition RESULTS Please CLICK HERE!!! After the business of the day we were very fortunate to have Terry Court Joint Chief executive of Brightwells auctioneers and the current president of the WPCS ,present a fascinating insight into his part of the Brightwells history in selling our beautiful welsh ponies for the last 55 years! I have to say that Brightwells have certainly put a huge amount of effort into selling and promoting the Welsh ponies and Cobs and there would be a very big gap if they ever gave up doing just that! Thank you Terry for a great afternoons entertainment and insight in sharing your huge wealth of experience during your working lifetime!! Some of the video footage we saw was taken from the new DVD out now called "The Grand Welsh Pony and Cob Studs Open Day" showing many superb ponies and Cobs from the Pennal, Trefaes,Menai and Friarly Studs. It is available as a three disc set from Dr Glyn Jones on 07977038027 or from his website www.gwarchodstud.co.uk All proceeds in aid of the Ceredigion Royal Welsh Show Appeal 2010.
